Why Culture Is the Foundation

At Bartlesville Cultural Center, revitalization has never been just about buildings.

It's about people.

It's about preserving history while creating opportunities for future generations.

Everything we're learning reinforces something we've believed from the beginning: communities are strongest when culture, education, preservation, and community development work together.

That belief didn't happen overnight.

It began during my time serving on the City's Endeavor 2045 planning committee. As we worked through Bartlesville's long-term vision, conversations repeatedly returned to West Bartlesville and the importance of recognizing its historically Black neighborhoods. One neighborhood, in particular, stood out: the Brickyard.

As planners shared historic aerial photographs and we discussed the area's history, it became clear that there was a story that deserved to be preserved and a community whose significance should not be forgotten.

Those conversations didn't end when the meetings were over.

They continued through conversations with residents, community leaders, historians, planners, and neighbors. We listened to stories, gathered photographs, researched local history, and began asking a simple question:

What would it look like to preserve West Bartlesville's history while creating new opportunities for its future?

That question became the foundation of West Bartlesville Revitalization.

As our research continued, we discovered something equally important. West Bartlesville Revitalization wasn't beginning from scratch. For years, the City of Bartlesville had already invested significant time, resources, and community input into this part of our city through planning efforts, focus groups, neighborhood discussions, and long-term visioning. Rather than creating an entirely new initiative, we recognized an opportunity to build upon that foundation, bring those conversations together, and help move them forward. Today, West Bartlesville Revitalization serves as a champion for that ongoing work, connecting past planning with present action while ensuring that culture remains at the center of the conversation.

From the beginning, culture wasn't an afterthought. It was the starting point.

We believe lasting revitalization begins by understanding a community's identity, honoring the people who built it, and preserving the stories that give it meaning. Economic development, housing, public spaces, and investment all become stronger when they're built on that foundation.

That's why Bartlesville Cultural Center continues to grow beyond the walls of a traditional cultural institution.

Through West Bartlesville Revitalization, we're helping lay the foundation for long-term community development while making sure every resident, business owner, property owner, investor, organization, and stakeholder who wants to help shape its future has a seat at the table.

Through Experience West Bartlesville, we're preserving and sharing the stories that define our neighborhood.

Through Cultural Closet, we're creating a social enterprise that helps support programs, preservation efforts, and future initiatives.

Together, these efforts are part of one vision: preserving what makes West Bartlesville special while creating new opportunities for those who call it home.

Culture was the catalyst that started this journey, and it will remain the catalyst for everything we do.
